Brianna Mase - Bohemian Soul and a Butterfly Mom

Brianna is a young and vibrant girl, my neighbor who raises butterflies. Her story is a beautiful reminder that life has many layers and that sometimes, we need to look closer to discover the hidden beauty around us.

Before we delve into Brianna’s story, let’s explore a few fascinating facts about butterflies’ spiritual context:

Transforming a caterpillar into a butterfly is a magical process, often seen as a metaphor for rebirth. But the spiritual symbolism of butterflies goes even more profound, inviting us to ponder the mysteries of life and transformation.

Butterflies symbolize personal growth on all levels with their transformative journey. They teach us the importance of internal reflection, the power of dissolving old patterns, and the beauty of emerging renewed. This process underscores the significance of surrender and trusts in our personal growth and evolution, inspiring us to embrace change and believe in our capacity for transformation.

Brianna mentioned these intriguing insights during our conversation. But before that, my interest in butterflies started when I noticed a lot of big butterflies fluttering around our yard. Intrigued, I wandered over to Brianna’s garden, which had become more vibrant every day since she moved in. That’s when she showed me her butterfly nursery—a miniature universe filled with cocoons transforming into butterflies. It was like witnessing a miracle of nature up close.

Curious to learn more, I invited Brianna to join me on a walk to our local botanical garden, Selby Gardens, and share her story.

Brianna’s connection to butterflies began serendipitously. Two years ago, she stumbled upon a chrysalis in her garden. It was a challenging time for her—she had just lost her job due to workplace bullying and was struggling financially. Seeing the butterfly emerge felt like a sign from the universe, a reminder that transformation and new beginnings are always possible.

This encounter inspired Brianna to start a pollinator garden for her mom, which led to a shared passion for butterflies and bees. Her mom's interest in pollinators ignited Brianna’s dedication to raising butterflies. Together, they nurtured these delicate creatures, and Brianna found solace and inspiration in their transformation.

Brianna’s journey with butterflies mirrors her healing process. She has been on a path to heal her body from a condition that affected her connective tissue, causing misalignment and chronic pain. She has been slowly restoring her health through daily physical therapy, yoga, and a commitment to wellness.

Butterflies, with their determined transformation from caterpillars, inspire Brianna. They remind her of the power of resilience and the beauty of growth. Over the past year, she has released over 150 butterflies, each one a testament to the transformative power of nature.

Brianna raises monarch butterflies in her garden, the host plant of which is milkweed. Nature does most of the work—she protects the caterpillars and provides a safe environment for their metamorphosis. It’s a simple yet profound hobby that brings her immense joy.

The dedication extends beyond her backyard. She’s part of an online community of butterfly enthusiasts who share tips and support. From learning to bleach eggs to prevent disease to connecting with fellow butterfly lovers, Brianna’s journey is enriched by this collective wisdom.

For Brianna, butterflies are more than just a hobby; they symbolize hope and resilience. She plans to continue raising monarchs and hopes to attract other butterfly species to her garden. Despite challenges like disease outbreaks, she remains committed to her butterfly family, finding inspiration in their strength.
