Artists worldwide will gather in Sarasota, bringing with them centuries-old traditions and techniques—from intricate 3D pavement illusions to the awe-inspiring Floralia Infiorata flower carpets, which will be presented for the first time in the United States. The Flower Carpet Festival, or "Infiorata," is a cherished European tradition where streets come alive with intricate designs made from flower petals, seeds, and other natural materials. These stunning, fleeting artworks often depict religious themes, historical events, or artistic motifs, transforming urban spaces into vibrant, immersive tapestries. Rooted in various cultures, the festival traditionally coincides with the Feast of Corpus Domini in late May or early June. It is celebrated in countries such as Italy, Spain, and Belgium.
The flower carpet tradition has deep roots in various cultures:
Italy: Since the 17th century, Infiorata festivals have honored religious events through elaborate floral art.
Spain: Similar traditions commemorate religious and cultural festivities, especially in the Canary Islands.
India: In Rangoli, colored powders and flowers are arranged into beautiful patterns during festivals.
In 2024, the Sarasota Chalk Festival, founded by Denise Kowal, introduced the “Floralia Infiorata” segment, bringing international flower carpet artists to the U.S. for the first time. Various countries' delegates will showcase their stunning, ephemeral creations from November 8 to 10 in Sarasota’s Burns Square district. Inspired by her visits to European flower carpet festivals, Denise expressed her excitement in a March 2024 interview https://www.bohemiansarasota.com/post/denise-kowal to bring this tradition to Sarasota. In July, she and Bill Baranowski, the festival’s managing director, traveled to Italy and the Canary Islands to collaborate with leading flower carpet organizations, further establishing international partnerships.
The festival will unite multiple delegations of international flower carpet artists, presenting time-honored traditions of ephemeral art.
Participating Artists and Their Countries:
Italy:
Genzano di Roma: Led by Maestra Claudia Gianiorio and Maestro Ivano Gianiorio, this delegation will present traditional Infiorata designs, continuing a 247-year legacy.
Gerano: Maestro Mariano Caciaguerra and Maestro Michele Caciaguerra will feature “Mary, Madonna of the Heart,” a 290-year-old tradition symbolizing devotion and heritage.
Spain (Canary Islands):
Tenerife: Maestro Ezequiel De Leon Cruz and his family will showcase carpets crafted from volcanic sands, a unique tradition from 1847.
Japan:
Hachijo-machi Hachijojima, Tokyo: Maestro Yasuhiko Fujikawa and his parents will lead the “Hanae Japan” team in depicting “Hana Kabuki,” merging floral art with Japanese theater.
India:
Pune, Maharashtra: Artists Mahendra Metkari and Bhagyashree Deshpande will create vibrant Rangoli designs, an ancient practice symbolizing “an array of colors.”
Mexico:
Huamantla: This delegation will present traditional flower carpets, representing the region’s rich cultural heritage.
