Fresh Mondays: Dating the City and Escaping to The Ringling

Everyone in Sarasota knows the Ringling Museum, our city’s most iconic landmark. There’s been a lot said about its stunning architecture and world-class exhibitions, and I won’t repeat what’s already been expertly covered on The Ringling’s website (https://www.ringling.org). Instead, I want to share my experience: the tranquility of silence, the refreshment of the mind, and the soul's fulfillment.

We all need to offload our minds sometimes, to step away from the constant flow of information and recharge. Every morning, we wake up and immediately “switch on” for work, family, and endless phone notifications. We’re always “online,” and sometimes it becomes too much. When that happens to me, I escape to my “day retreat” at the Ringling Museum. Alone, I spend a few hours there, soaking in the beauty and the noble energy the space offers.

Arriving right when the museum opens at 10:00 AM is essential. The early hours provide a calm atmosphere, with fewer visitors and a sense of purity in the air. This is when the museum feels most alive in a quiet, understated way. It allows me to explore the exhibits at my own pace, taking in the art and architecture with fresh eyes and an open mind. This solitude isn’t just about being alone; it’s about creating a space for my thoughts to flow freely, unburdened by the noise of everyday life.

On some days, I bring my laptop with me. During these moments, I feel compelled to write down my thoughts and observations to analyze myself and my reality. The museum’s serene environment is the perfect backdrop for this introspection, offering a place where I can capture the inspiring ideas and insights that surface when surrounded by such beauty.

I take a break by noon and head to “The Ringling Grillroom,” within the museum, for a light lunch. The café is a hidden gem, offering a warm, welcoming atmosphere with quality food and attentive service. It’s a notable difference from the commercial feel of typical museum cafés. Sitting by the pond with a fresh salad and a well-prepared beverage, I feel a sense of calm and a comforting, homey atmosphere that's hard to find anywhere else.

After a few hours at the Ringling, I leave feeling recharged, my mind clear, and my spirit lifted. The Ringling offers much more than a cultural experience—it has a beautiful vibe where I can reconnect with myself and gather the energy I need to face the week ahead.

If you’re looking for a different way to see a familiar place, I encourage you to visit the Ringling on your own. Please arrive early, take your time, and allow the quiet and beauty of the space to work its magic. It’s a simple yet powerful way to reset and find a renewed sense of purpose.
