ART CENTER SARASOTA
Today, I enjoyed stepping into the luminous abode of the exceptionally talented artist Melanie Whaley. Her Sarasota home, adorned with contemporary elegance intertwined with ancient Asian motifs and Indonesian patterns, exuded a sense of tranquility and soulful energy.
As I sat with Melanie in the serene ambiance of her living space, I found myself captivated by her artistic prowess and magnetic spirit. I intended to delve into Melanie’s creative journey, yet our conversation effortlessly wandered through the tapestry of her life.
Among Melanie’s many insights and visions on art, one resonated profoundly at the beginning of our chat: “I follow the light, and I let the shadow hold the light.” Her words revealed a deep understanding of the interplay between light and darkness, echoing in every stroke of her artistic philosophy.
Melanie’s journey in the arts began as a classical ballet dancer on a different stage. From the hallowed halls of The School of American Ballet to the bustling kitchens of a professional cook, her path meandered through diverse landscapes, each experience leaving its mark on her soul. Her passion for painting was ignited in the vibrant city of Singapore, where she lived for a while with her husband. Surrounded by the rich tapestry of Asian culture, she found herself drawn to the canvas, expressing her innermost thoughts and emotions with each brushstroke.
In 1994, Melanie returned to the United States to study at the Art Students League of New York, further honing her craft and refining her artistic vision. Now, nestled in the heart of Sarasota, she continues to inspire us with her beautiful art, each piece a testament to the journey that brought her here.
One of Melanie’s most intriguing muses is a deer skull she discovered while living in upstate NY. This enigmatic artifact now resides in Melanie’s home studio and inspires many of her paintings. Its presence is haunting and fascinating, inviting viewers to contemplate the mysteries of life, death, beauty, and decay.
As she aptly says about the meaning of her paintings, “Artwork should give you a good feeling and make you think.” In the presence of Melanie Whaley and her mesmerizing creations, one can’t help but feel both inspired and intrigued, invited to explore the depths of imagination and emotion through her art.
